An otolaryngologist is a physician trained in the medical and surgical management of ear, nose and throat diseases and disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commonly referred to as ENTs, they identify and treat diseases of the ears, nose, sinuses, larynx, mouth, throat and structures of the face and neck. Otolaryngologists complete up to 15 years of college and post-graduate training, including medical school. Many also complete a one- or two-year fellowship to gain more extensive training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All otolaryngologist must be certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are seven areas of expertise in the field of otolaryngology: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Allergy.<\/strong> This includes treatment for hay fever, seasonal rhinitis and chronic sinus infections.<\/li>
  2. Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.<\/strong> This includes treatment for deviated septums, face lifts and rhinoplasty.<\/li>
  3. Head and Neck.<\/strong> This includes treatment for thyroid disorders, lumps in the neck and cancer of the voice box. <\/li>
  4. Laryngology (throat).<\/strong> This includes treatment for sore throats, swallowing disorders and GERD.<\/li>
  5. Otology\/Neurotology (ears).<\/strong> This includes treatment for ear infections, hearing loss and tinnitus. <\/li>
  6. Pediatric Otolaryngology.<\/strong> This includes treatment for tonsil and adenoid infections, asthma and sinus disease. <\/li>
  7. Rhinology (nose).<\/strong> This includes treatment for stuffy noses, loss of smell and nasal polyps. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
